2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Release

Our 2011 Cabernet exhibits restraint and elegance, while simultaneously showcasing the true colors and terroir of the Kelly Fleming estate. In order to preserve these qualities, the wine received slightly longer skin contact in tank, and slightly less new oak during barrel aging. This vintage provides a unique opportunity to see Napa Valley Cabernet in a style more reflective of the grape’s heritage in Bordeaux.

The year was characterized by a damp and cool spring moving into a cooler than average summer. The low spring temperatures led to a late bloom, and the low summer temperatures delayed ripening, ultimately leading to a late harvest. The challenges of the season provided an opportunity for the best in Napa Valley to shine. Through careful daily attention in the vineyard, thinning substandard fruit and extremely careful cluster selection, we produced a low yield harvest of outstanding fruit and concentrated flavors.

In 2011, our flagship Estate Cabernet also received a fresh new look, marking its 10th vintage release. Simple, clean and contemporary, the new label features Kelly Fleming’s signature “F” olive branch logo against a matte white background. The effect is at once elegant yet powerful – the perfect expression of the wine inside the bottle.

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Release

Our fall release highlights a special wine in our history. The 2010 Cabernet was the first vintage crafted at our 5,000 square-foot estate winery, which was completed in May 2010.

Appropriately, this distinct wine is one of the finest we have made. The individual blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon from our 12 acre vineyard were hand harvested at peak flavor intensity, then fermented on the skins for three weeks. The wine was then aged 20 months in 80% new French Oak and bottled in June 2012.

Rains returned in 2010 after three dry years and the summer brought cooler than normal temperatures. The relatively cool growing season resulted in a late and shortened harvest with lower yields but concentrated flavors that have materialized into an elegant, structured wine. With yields down in the vineyard and careful selection in the cellar, just 722 cases were produced.

New Release from Kelly Fleming Wines

2011 Sauvignon Blanc

May 2012

With the arrival of spring, we announce our latest release, the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc.

A total of 14 Tons of Sauvignon Blanc were harvested from three separate Napa Valley vineyards between September 13 and September 23, 2011. While the wine is comprised primarily of Sauvignon Musque, a drizzle of Sauvignon Blanc (Clone 1) was included in the final blend. The wine was destemmed, lightly pressed, then fermented in a combination of French oak barrels (20% new), stainless barrels, and small tanks for approximately 4 weeks. It was then allowed to age on the lees for about 4 months.

"This fresh, aromatic white wine shows delicate aromas of melons, kiwi, fresh pineapple and a hint of lemon zest. On the palate, the structure shows a soft entry, with crisp acidity adding structure to the mid-palate and finish. The flavors highlight the pineapple and citrus-peel notes, with refreshing lemongrass and mineral flavors adding complexity." ---Celia Welch, Winemaker

New Releases from Kelly Fleming Wines

2008 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

September 2011

With the arrival of fall, we announce our latest releases: 2010 Sauvignon Blanc and 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon.

This ‘new’ Sauvignon Blanc is our third release. Winemaker Celia Welch searched hill-and-dale to find three ‘tasty’ vineyards---two in Oakville and one in Pope Valley---and made sure that the winemaking regimen created a nuanced wine. Skin contact, gentle pressing, sur-lie aging before moving to oak and stainless steel---these hands-on techniques have resulted in a Sauvignon Blanc which is delicious drinking! Floral and tropical notes, touches of vanilla and crisp apple, all precede a refreshing glass of wine, both delicate and complex at the same time.

We crafted this to be a versatile version of Sauvignon Blanc: it partners well with a wide range of foods, whether a whole roasted fish, a lightly sauced pasta, roasted vegetables or slices of sourdough and Sonoma Jack.

Our other new fall release is a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. It's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the organic estate vineyards that surround the Kelly Fleming winery. In September 2008, at the peak of their flavor, the vineyards were hand-harvested block by block under Celia's supervision. This young wine was aged in small French oak barrels (85% new) to mature in our caves for 20 months prior to bottling. Only 700 cases were made.

Dark, rich aromas of warm cherry pie, vanilla, cassis and forest floor notes waft from the glass as this very ripe Cabernet opens aromatically.  While the emphasis is on the ripe fruit at entry, the undertones of toasty oak, buttered pecans, and baking spices provide base notes to the somewhat more ethereal ripe berry and floral flavors.  Structurally, the wine is broad and soft, but with enough backbone to support the fruit intensity and provide ageability.  The finish showcases the juicy, fresh fruit flavors of this superb vineyard.
